2013 Fairfax Jubilaires Show

Fairfax showWe are SO LUCKY to be a part of such a large and loving barbershop family. Once again, the Fairfax Jubilaires’ annual chapter show was one of the highlights of our year. A new venue this year breathed new life into the program and we were so fortunate to be a part of an impressive line-up. The audiences for both the 2 p.m. show and the 7 p.m. show were so energetic and warm, and the chorus sure knows how to throw a heckuva party at the afterglow!

Friends for Life

One of the highlights of our day, and it was a long time in the making, was singing an 8-part arrangement of “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better” with Sweet Adelines quartet Speed of Sound (go LIKE them on Facebook… you won’t be sorry). Arranged by the awesome Larry Wright, the tune is fun and sassy. It basically pits the two quartets against each other in a competition, fighting to sing higher, hold notes longer and sing sweeter! By the end, we decide to get along and deliver a big finish. We had so much fun getting ready for this song. Epic is located in the D.C. and Speed of Sound is not, hailing from waaaaayyyyy south of the Mason-Dixon Line! Thank goodness for learning tracks.

EpicSoSWhen we got together before the show, the rehearsals were energetic and there was an instant chemistry between our two quartets. These chicks are CLASS ACTS. They are ranked well heading into Sweet Adelines’ International Competition in Hawaii (lucky them!) and we expect BIG things for Speed of Sound. They are talented, and they are good, good people. We were honored to share the stage with them and enjoyed just being in the audience as they did their thing on stage.

We also helped pay back to the universe some of the “missed flight” karma that we racked up heading into our own International competition when Shana missed her flight out of D.C. to Florida. This time, Speed of Sound’s baritone, Carter, had flight drama from Florida to D.C.! She sped toward the show site in a taxi from Reagan airport just as the show was starting. Even though Epic was supposed to sing after the intermission, we partnered up with Speed of Sound and we all quickly decided to change spots in the line-up. Epic sang first, buying some more time for Carter. Just as we hit the stage, she arrived and slipped into her costume. They warmed up and hit the stage with energy FAR beyond what a weary air traveler has any right to have! We were so happy to repay the airline gods who got Shana to us in time for IC&C rehearsals by playing a small role in Speed of Sound having a successful show experience.

Da Boys

A quick word about the guys of Da Capo. Anyone in the barbershop world and especially anyone in our neck of the woods knows just how special these guys are. Not only are they amazingly talented but they are great guys. They just posted a fantastic score at prelims and they are headed into their own International contest in Toronto this summer with loaded guns.

We have made a bit of a Fairfax afterglow tradition out of targeting the baritone of the male guest quartet for Anne’s “One More Minute” solo. Last year, Anne sang to Larry Tulley (Boston Common, Our Town) and learned that he would escalate just as fast as she could. This year, Da Capo’s Joe Sawyer was a great sport and played an excellent “straight man” to Anne’s antics. A fine tradition, indeed! We’re trying to get the video pulled together and we’ll share it ASAP.

We owe a deep and heartfelt thanks to our “boys” in the Fairfax Chorus. These guys hired us for their show last year just months after we formed. We barely had a handful of songs together when they contacted us in the fall of 2011 and asked if we would do the 2012 show. To come back again in 2013 is like coming home after a long journey. They believed in Epic before we probably believed in ourselves, and certainly long before we had any bling on our heads. Making them proud is one of our coolest accomplishments to date. We just love them all.

A Great Day to Be Epic

We won’t go on and on, but we will say that it was just a good day to be an Epic. This quartet has already taken us on such a crazy journey and we continue to rack up memorable moments all the time. Yesterday’s shows and afterglow were just really stinkin’ fun. We were relaxed and chilling. The eyelashes went on without drama, Anne’s updo cooperated and everyone had all costume pieces except one black tank top (thank goodness Chris had an extra!). We even had a Starbucks right across the street from the venue!! Oh yes, a good day, indeed.

Shana was working and multitasking, as always (she’s a busy chick). Anne was goofy and made about 100 new friends, as always. Mama Chris brought about $800 worth of food and snacks and took good care of us, as always. And pregnant Kris (Anne introduced her as the “Epic incubator” on stage! LOL) managed NOT to puke right on the evening show stage when the baby decided to shift and make a punching bag out of her stomach. Whew. Good day.

Check out some of our pictures from the day. We’ll add more as we have them! Thanks to all who came, and thanks to those who supported us from a distance!

2012 Harmony Queens

“What will be even more amazing is when we win a crown and have this as a story…”

Anne Albright in a text from the Emergency Room, 1:31 a.m., Friday

From the moment Epic formed, we have been on a certain trajectory as a quartet. The Universe has had a certain plan for the quartet and often, as individuals, we sort of feel like we’re just along for the ride. From the way we met and formed to the fact that we had our first gig and our first outfit before we even knew our first song, we could all tell that some special things were in store for Epic. Of all the many amazing things we have experienced, none has come close–or is ever likely to come close–to the week we just experienced at the 2012 Harmony, Incorporated, International Convention & Contest (IC&C) in Orlando, Fla. We walked away as the 2012 Harmony Queens–but those who were at the event know we had a few obstacles to overcome in order to have our dream come true. This is probably why it hasn’t really sunk in yet that those beautiful crowns came home with us.

We’d like to share the story now (and it’s going to be LONG), not only because it’s somewhat unbelievable, but because it will always help us remember what turned out to be a magical milestone on this crazy journey.

First we need a bass…

The week had an interesting start because bass Shana missed her flight. She misjudged the reliability of public transportation and her original plane headed to Orlando without her. Luckily, the kind airport folks got her quickly rescheduled to the next departing flight so the trio at least knew she was on her way! She missed a rehearsal and a fun dinner with the Epic fan club, but we were happy to have her in our collective arms later that night.

Airport employees = 10 points

Thursday focus

We cannot share often enough how instrumental our coach, Richard Lewellen, is to our success. Starting bright and early at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Richard took Epic through a disciplined and focused (but still fun!) series of rehearsals throughout the day. He lovingly guided us in that final day to dig deep and to bring Epic heart and personality to the stage–and nothing more. If you are in a competing quartet, we cannot recommend highly enough doing everything in your power to bring a trusted coach with you to contest. Release yourself to him/her and let him/her pave the way to your goals.

Richard Lewellen = 200 points

We also had our amazing Harmony Queen coach, Lynn Jacobs, on Thursday. We impressed her with the progress we’ve made since our last Skype session with her and we made her cry because she was so proud of us. We are very grateful for her support–even when we were stubborn about sticking to our ballad set/uptune set song order. True love is when you get support from a person who questions your choices but falls on train tracks anyway to show her unconditional love. We’re like the teenagers she wishes she never had!! Just kidding :-) We love her more than we can express!

Lynn = 2 points (the most important 2 points… because those are the ones she wants and deserves!)

Reflexology

We are also very grateful to Gene Butterfield, a lifetime barbershopper and gifted reflexologist. During our final rehearsal Thursday, he drove from his home a little more than an hour away to help us get centered and address problem issues like breathing, anxiety and other woes. It was relaxing and fun. Kris may have a newly discovered talent in this area! It was fun and relaxing and just what we needed!

Gene Butterfield = 25 points

Let the games begin!

Now to the part about which you may be the most curious. How in the world did Anne end up in the Emergency Room just hours before the contest?

On Thursday after an intense rehearsal, the Epic gang headed downstairs for lunch. Anne often needs time to let the new information from a session sink in, so she headed to her room for some down time. Her fatal mistake, we later learned, was ordering a spinach and salmon salad via room service. It never quite settled right  and she decided after dinner that she would skip the Queens’ show and get a good night of sleep. Later, when Chris and Richard returned to the room, she was sick and sharing that the stabbing pain in her abdomen felt just like the time she had terrible food poisoning. She tried to sleep and get comfortable for the next several hours, but she was getting no relief. At shortly before midnight, Chris visited the front desk of the hotel and requested the paramedics. They loaded her up on a stretcher and headed toward the ambulance waiting in front of the hotel. Meanwhile, Chris is practically sobbing to the paramedics: “Please give her some help soon! Don’t make her wait! We have a big singing competition tomorrow and she will be so mad if we can’t do it. She’s worked really hard. Please take care of my girl!”

Anne went to a nearby hospital for fluids and anti-nausea medicine. She finally made it back to the hotel room by 4 a.m. and quickly passed out from exhaustion.

Ambulance guys (who happened to be hot) and ER staff = 50 points

Wake-up call

When Chris and Richard stirred at 6 a.m. Friday, they knew immediately that Anne was in no condition to get up and start getting ready. Originally, Epic had planned to be fully dressed and ready for warm-ups at 8:30 a.m. We were slated to be contestant #1. Richard called the amazing Jacquie Jensen for guidance and she offered to consult with the judging panel and let Epic sing first after intermission. Thank you, God! Two extra hours!

Contest and judging administrators = 150 points

Heroic effort

We went into teamwork mode at that point. Richard and John Rector (Kris’s dad) went to hunt down a pharmacy to fill Anne’s anti-nausea prescription. The rest of Epic got ready early so we could help Anne with her hair and makeup when she woke up. So many of our friends and family helped shuttle stockings and fake eyelashes and name badges and other supplies between quartet members’ rooms… and were basically at the ready to do whatever we needed.

Family and friends at our command = 50 points

And most heroic of all … Anne dragged her poor, sick body out of bed, took some meds for her continued abdominal pain and started warming up in the shower.

Anne’s perseverance, Round #1 = 225 points

Somehow or another, we went through “the pattern” and landed on the contest stage. We were all so concerned about Anne that we didn’t stress much about our pending hit on stage. In the 15 minutes in the final ready room, we sang just a line or two, practiced our walk-on, and then huddled up for a very long and very heartfelt prayer. Listening to Shana’s smooth and calming voice, we invited God into our hearts to protect and guide us in reaching our goal to touch our audience.

God = Well, we can’t give God points. But He deserves them all.

Those moments on stage were so “alive.” We stayed very connected to each other as a quartet and the brief glances among ourselves conveyed the unspoken message that things were going well. The energy of the audience was so energizing, and when we walked off stage, we collapsed into each others’ arms and the waterworks started flowing!

Supportive Harmony, Inc., audience = 300 points

Round #2… we made the finals!

After our semi-finals set, Anne walked back to the room to rest and have some saltines (and more meds). In that brief span of time, as all the adrenaline ran out of her system, her body began to sort of shut down. She was shaking, exhausted and she was about to spike a fever. She tried to sleep but again was in too much pain. As it was almost time to start getting ready for the finals, the poor thing tortured herself with a tepid bath to cool down. We wish you could have seen the fierceness behind those eyes. She was going to make it to that stage again or die trying!

Again, we focused more on Anne than last-minute fixes or clean-ups. There wasn’t really too much time to get worried about what would happen on stage. So we once again used our warm up room to laugh (the lovely topic this time was farting…don’t ask) and to pray.

Anne fierceness, Round #2 = 200 points

The big reveal

Epic poured a lot of our pre-contest energy into the big surprise we had in store for Harmony, Inc.–Cruella De Vil. We actually came up with this idea when we were driving back to the airport after the Area 2 contest in April. We had just qualified for Orlando and Shana said, “We should do some sort of Disney song… you know, something sassy.” Kris and Chris, the two barberbrats in Epic, looked at each other and said, “Wouldn’t it be crazy to do Vocal Spectrum’s Cruella?”

The wheels were in motion. We called upon our talented coach to help us re-voice some of the trickier spots in the brilliant David Wright arrangement, including the tag. His solutions were perfect and truly positioned Epic to be successful with the song.

Richard’s music theory magic = 50 points

Many of you have asked about the Cruella set outfits. Let’s just say that our tenor loves to shop and will go to great lengths to find a good deal and hunt down the four necessary sizes! We also have a talented seamstress in the family with Epic mom Debbie… she made the boleros for us to get the exact look we were after!

Chris Lewellen loves to shop = 25 points

Debbie loves us and made boleros = 50 points

The call-off

Ladies and gents, we can’t even begin to explain what we were feeling during the call-off. The trip to the stage, the crowning, the flowers, the medals, the fanfare… it was magical and stunning. One minute we were Epic, contest survivors, and the next minute we were Epic, 2012 Harmony Queens. We are glad there are pictures to prove that it actually happened because we don’t really remember much of it.

After the medalist fanfare, some thank yous, a very special welcome by the Harmony Queens and lots of pictures, we shared a few quiet moments with the incredibly classy chicks of Foreign Exchange, the 2011 Harmony Queens. We are forever connected to our sister Queens and we are grateful for such a warm and thoughtful welcome from them. They even hunted down Mickey Mouse crown necklaces for us so we would have a special keepsake from the place where we won. Isn’t that incredible?

Foreign Exchange = 75 points

Love and hugs from the Harmony Queens = 100 points

Saturday fun

We were up early on Saturday, as instructed, to get ready for our photo session with the talented Betsy Groner. We donned our amazing crowns and headed to Downtown Disney for some super-cute pictures. Anne nearly got us kicked out by security a time or two, so she was certainly starting to feel better.

If anyone wants to give Anne a quick tutorial on the meaning of the phrase, “Please stay off the stage,” feel free!

Betsy and a fun photo session = 50 points

Next, we rushed off to the chorus contest and, though we missed the mic tester chorus (boo!) because our photos ran a little late, we made it back in time for the first competitor. They introduced us (awww… awesome!) as we walked into the hall and we took our FRONT ROW seats to settle in and enjoy the contest. What an amazing vantage point to witness up close all of the joy and emotion on each competitor’s face! It was awesome. Once again, Foreign Exchange took great care of us… even making sure we had lunch at the break. We love them!

Many folks at the contest thanked us for hopping up to greet all of the chorus contestants as they walked off the stage and back into the audience. Here’s the thing–it was 100% our pleasure. We received so much love and support from the audience the day before that we simply felt compelled to give a small portion of it back. Plus, there was an amazing energy that came from those beautiful women who had just accomplished their contest goals… we were soaking up every minute of it.

Energy of the chorus competitors = 250 points

A night to celebrate

The Saturday night parade of champs was so fun for us. We loved being giddy and goofy with our fellow chorus and quartet medalists backstage and we especially loved that nearly 25 of Epic’s family and friends were in the audience to see us perform.

For those who weren’t there, we want to quickly share a few thanks once again:

  • Harmony, Inc., and especially our home team of Area 2
  • Our coaches, Lynn and Richard
  • Our contest song arrangers: Tom Gentry, Clay Hine, Nancy Bergman and David Wright
  • Our adopted chorus, the Fairfax Jubilaires of the Barbershop Harmony Society. We love you guys!
  • Our amazing husbands (Gregg, Richard, Andy and Rob) and our babies (Morgan, Bryn, Jack, Ainsley, William, and furry baby Kuma)
  • All of the people who supported us financially through our fundraisers and benefit concerts…. thank you for being a part of our dream!

All of the people behind the scenes who made this happen = 43 points

Wrapping it up

We could go on and on about how full our hearts are after the 2012 IC&C, but the bottom line is that we are just so humbled and grateful to represent Harmony, Inc., in this historic way. We love this organization down deep in our bones and we’re truly only at the beginning of this journey. We have big plans to spread the sisterhood of Harmony, Inc., everywhere we go. We are beginning the foundation building that must happen for us to start a chapter in this expansion area, and we will begin laying tracks for our first CD in early 2013.

It all adds up to 1855 points, but to us, it simply adds up to one amazing dream come true. We love you all.

An Epic Cause

Hello friends! We recently received some exciting news … yet another amazing stop on this Epic journey! On the recommendation of our coach Lynn Jacobs, we auditioned to be a part of The A Cappella Sing-Off at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Va. The contest, which takes place on Dec. 6, is super cool for several reasons:

  1. A Cappella contests are cool. We made some amazing friends during our Harmony Sweepstakes experience, so naturally we were up for round two!
  2. This particular contest is judged by Rockapella. Rockapella, people. Be still our collective hearts. Rock. A. Pellll. Ahhhh. *sigh*
  3. This event supports two fantastic charities. One for singers and one to promote lifelong literacy. Both of these fall squarely into our happy place.

FAN FAVES

While Rockapella (sigh, again) will determine The Sing-Off champs, part of the event includes an online campaign to determine the “fan favorite” of the contest. For $1 per vote, you can help Epic raise money for Literacy for Life and the Williamsburg Choral Guild, both 501 (c) (3) organizations.

We are competing against A Cappella groups representing a wide range of styles and some of them are BIG. With 10+ members, these other noble competitors may have an obvious advantage, but what they don’t realize is that we are part of a BARBERSHOP FAMILY!! Power in numbers.

We would appreciate your support… even just a single vote for $1. Or maybe a few votes for the price of a latte. Every vote will help!

VOTE NOW FOR EPIC

THANK YOU!

We appreciate your help! Stay tuned to our Epic voting page to see how we’re doing!

Orlando Send-Off concert

Hello everyone! It’s taken us the better part of the week to circle back around to this blog post, but we are still riding high from last weekend’s send-off concert with the Fairfax Jubil-Aires. Many of you may have seen that we posted some fun pictures to Facebook (and we’ll add a little gallery here as well), but we have to take a quick moment to go “on the record” after such a great night.

We had an interesting set of circumstances surrounding this concert that made it not-so-hot in the vocal department. Kris was struggling vocally to begin with and started the day with virtually no voice at all. She was literally eating spoonfuls of honey direct from the jar. And apple juice. And tea. And potato chips (XOXO, Ashley Wright!). After some meds and a breathing treatment, she started sounding more human and less alien by the second half of the day. Still, she was so frustrated with her vocal production that we eventually decided to stop warming up or running through our sets… might as well give her a fighting chance to have something left for the stage.

Then, Anne sucked in a big ole’ lungful of grass pollen at our afternoon gig, which was outside. That triggered a lovely asthma attack and she was still struggling to get a good breath in the evening at the concert.

You get the picture. Epic noises were not so hot. But we fought through and wowed the warm (and incredibly understanding) crowd with three outfit changes instead!

We are very grateful to the folks who helped us pull it off (Cliff, Obie, Cat, Tom, Debbie, Richard, Julia and the Epic families) as well as all the people who carved out a chunk of their weekends to spend with us. The support continues to floor us. And thank you to Shameless and ACME Chord Company for being a part of the night!

A huge virtual HUG needs to go to the men of the Fairfax Jubil-Aires chorus. Once again, these guys have become our adopted chorus and continually make us feel like a part of their family. They support us in so many ways and all of our successes are shared with them. XOXO…. EpicImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Our #1 Fan!?!

We have been more than a little vocal about the fact that we met Robert Duvall back in May at the Virginia Gold Cup horse races. After we did our National Anthem hit, we were ushered around to various sponsors’ tents to meet some impressive dignitaries. In the course of that whirlwind tour, we met the kind, warm and engaging Mr. Robert Duvall.

Robert Duvall, Epic, a Harmony Inc. quartet, performs the National Anthem at the Virginia Gold CupHe enjoyed our music, sharing with us that the tunes we sing from eras gone by remind him of his younger years. Mr. Duvall is a musician himself and he comes from a very musical family. At the Gold Cup, he asked for our card and wanted to know if we’d join him at his Virginia farm the next time he was hosting a party. Naturally, we said we would move heaven and earth to make it happen!

Fast forward to about a month ago and the lovely Ms. Daisy, Mr. Duvall’s Virginia-based assistant, reached out to ask if we would perform on a Thursday evening for a party Mr. Duvall was hosting in his “party barn.” Um, yeah!

So here’s the coolest thing about all of this coolness. When Mr. Duvall’s wife, the unbelievably gorgeous Luciana Pedraza, first walked up to us to greet us, the words that came out of her mouth were along the lines of this: “Oh my goodness… it’s Epic! I finally get to meet you! Bobby has been talking so much about you. Thank you for being here tonight. He’s such a big fan. He has told me so much about you.”

Umm, oh my goodness.. .say WHAT?! Robert Duvall is Epic’s #1 fan?? We are in love. Forever and always!

We had a moment at one point at the evening when we all looked at each other with big eyes and an “are you kidding me?” sort of look on our faces. Shana said, “Who would have thought?” Who would have thought at the beginning of this epic journey that would have ended up having such amazing experiences together. Wow.

Two Shows and a ‘Glow

Happy Mother’s Day everyone!!! We wrap up a whole weekend of mommy celebration today! First of all, Epic bari Kris celebrated her son’s FIRST BIRTHDAY on Friday. Robert William Adams IV is such a joy in the Epic family so we wish him the happiest first birthday ever and a warm congrats to Kris and her hubby, Rob, for surviving their first year as parents!

Epic, a Harmony Inc., female barbershop quartet, Fairfax Jubil-Aires, dressing room

Epic hanging out in the dressing room during the Fairfax Jubil-Aires’ annual show.

Now May 12th has been an important day in the Epic universe for a LONG time. It was the first gig we booked as a quartet, and if memory serves, we may have known approximately one song when we signed the contract last year!!! The Fairfax Jubil-Aires organization is so, so, so supportive of us… they’ve adopted us! A huge thank you to them for giving us this opportunity!

The theme of the show was “A Salute to Troops (and Moms)” and the script featured a through-the-ages musical journey that highlighted each of the eras of the major wars in American history. Alongside a fantastic Sweet Adelines quartet, Sound Advice, and a stunning color guard, we kicked off the show with the Star Spangled Banner.

Then we sang several songs in our Andrews-Sisters-style outfits… it was fun being the USO girls!!! We were battling some vocal and physical issues as a quartet, but we fought hard through the set and delivered for both the afternoon and evening shows.

In celebration of the ladies in our lives, we enjoyed having Shana’s mom, aunt and sister, Chris’s mom and daughters, Anne’s daughter and Kris’s mom in the audience during the two shows. A great way to celebrate the mommy’s-day weekend.

Anne Albright, Our Town, Epic, Harmony Inc. quartet, barbershop, a cappella

Anne gets some special attention from Our Town!

A highlight of the day for us was sharing the stage with Our Town. There’s so much star power in this quartet and they are beyond captivating. Both audiences were smitten with the quartet and we had such a fun time with them at the afterglow. Anne targeted Larry Tully for her “One More Minute” solo and asked him to pull a chair up in front of the mic so she could begin the serenade. The problem, Anne learned, is that it’s pretty hard to out-joke a jokester. Hard to out-brat a brat. She fired at him, he played along and fired back and the whole room was left laughing to the point of tears. The “pips” barely made it to the end of the song with all the laughing!

When it was Our Town’s turn to sing at the ‘glow, they too invited Anne to take a chair in front of the mic. The pay-back on the serenade started out innocent enough, but eventually Our Town’s lead, Scott Brannon, ended up singing while sitting on Anne’s lap. It was awesome.

We put the afterglow to bed way too late and today we revel in the success of yet another Epic adventure! Once again, we wish everyone a relaxing and enjoyable Mother’s Day. XOXO.

WHAT WE LEARNED FROM OUR FIRST “TWO-SHOWS-AND-A-GLOW”:

  • Anne will forget stuff. Even when there’s a packing list. She just stops reading at a certain point.
  • Shana has the best time-killing conversation topics EVER.
  • Between-the-shows Starbucks runs seem likely to include quick stops at pharmacies for gastrointestinal relief meds.
  • Shana and Anne’s FIRST (yes, very first!) afterglow was a memorable one, for sure.
  • It is intimidating as heck to have an arranger of your song in the audience… especially when he arranged a great song JUST FOR YOU and you don’t want to let him down.
  • It’s even cooler to see said arranger after the show and have him approach you with a smile that reaches all the way to his eyes when he tells you that he wasn’t disappointed (We love you Larry Wright!).
  • Ashley Wright, who is Larry’s daughter (again, said arranger), made our learning tracks for said arrangement and she is the most stunning, smiling, talented barbershopper you could hope to meet. She was at the shows/glow and having our “learning track” in the flesh proved very helpful. She recommended Lay’s potato chips to help coat the throat a little (Chris and Kris were fighting allergies somethin’ fierce!)…. we picked up some chips on that Starbucks run and ate some chips before show #2. It worked. It was awesome. We love her. And we hate her for how much running we’ll have to do because of those chips.
  • Anne’s lap-sitting habits will backfire if she picks a bratty enough recipient!
  • When you hang out with a bunch of people who are as passionate about barbershop music as you are, the laughs, music sharing (ehem, song idea stealing), discussions about the art form and hugs are in limitless supply.
  • We love Cliff Shoemaker. To pieces. Forever. He is one of the best humans we know.

Epic Loves Robert Duvall

We are in love….

Epic, a Harmony Inc. barbershop quartet, Robert Duvall, Gold Cup, National Anthem, Christina Lewellen, Anne Albright, Kristina Adams, Shana Oshiro

Epic had the extreme pleasure of visiting with actor Robert Duvall at the 2012 Virginia Gold Cup races. An experience to remember!

Oh Say Can You See!

2012 Virginia Gold Cup, Epic quartet, a Harmony Inc. An absolutely unbelievable day for Epic today, folks. We knew that it would be a BIG day, but I don’t think any of us imagined just how BIG it would be!!

We sang the National Anthem at the 2012 Virginia Gold Cup races. As if it isn’t enough to hear your quartet’s sound echoing far and wide across miles of Virginia countryside, we also sang for the Governor of Virginia and Robert Duvall. Yes, folks, that’s right. We not only sang for Robert Duvall, but Anne also sang to him while sitting on his lap.

Only Epic.

Crazy Contest Weekend

Epic, Harmony Inc., barbershop quartet, contest

One of our final rehearsals in the room before heading off to the contest stage.

It was crazy. It was a weekend. And it was also our very first barbershop contest! We walked out with the first place medals, which is amazing, but we also walked out so much closer to our Area 2 sisters, more educated thanks to the judges and the incredible performers who call Area 2 home, and more deeply bonded as a quartet than we could have ever imagined at the start of this amazing journey!

If you’ll indulge us in a few moments to share all of our thanks, we promise to also include some embarrassing behind-the-scenes Epic stories. For those of you who know our lead, Anne, you know that things can get out of control when she’s involved, so this is actually a pretty good deal for you :-)

We met at Dulles Airport Thursday morning with an obscene amount of luggage for a four-day trip! Our flight was delayed, which allowed Anne to get really excited (insert sarcastic tone here) about our tiny little plane. She hates flying. But she loves Epic, so alas…. As we were waiting for our delayed flight, we entertained ourselves with the airline worker who was making announcements on the PA for “Alllllllll-Baaannnnnn-eeeeeeeeee.” (Seriously, ask Richard to do the voice. It’s awesome)

After landing in Burlington, Vt., we rented our mini-van (woo hoo! party!) and headed toward the border. Shockingly, they let us into Canada. Anne immediately decided to use her “French” accent to say everything she read, regardless of whether or not the words were indeed in French. Unfortunately, Anne’s French accent comes out a little more like cockney….think ‘ello-guv’nuh Brittish accent plus a bottle of wine. Thus, the newly-minted Epic saying (with a Brittish, not French accent), “Would you like a Beignet??”

Epic, Harmony Inc., female barbershop quartet, Richard Lewellen

Coach Richard Lewellen kept us calm and focused... we couldn't have done it without him!

We are so incredibly grateful that our coach, Richard, was in Montreal with us. He kept us focused and on time–which is defintely saying something for Epic. We know that we have a lot to learn and more growth to accomplish, but Richard helped us take onto the contest stage the skills and knowledge we have at this point in our development. We love our Ricky… our moments on the contest stage couldn’t have happened without his love, expertise, and spankings (just kidding).

We are completely in love with the judges/candidates who conducted our evals… John, Chris (music), Claire, Lynn (singing), and Linda and Kerri (presentation). We love you. We trust you. We will work on everything you shared. We won’t let you down.

And, ohmygoodness, Area 2!!!! These women are AMAZING. The Montreal City Voices chorus not only hosted the entire weekend event, but also took to the contest stage a super-fun package! We are so excited that Sounds of the Seacoast took the top honors… and we have to say that those Saturday night coconuts in the front row were getting us all hot and bothered :-) !! New England Voices of Harmony (2nd place) wowed us with its “Shall We Dance” tune and the Women of Note chorus had such a great presence on stage (and they have the presentation scores to prove it!). The Capital Chordettes of Ottawa have a special place in Epic’s heart. We performed for them in Hershey last year and they welcomed us back with such warm arms to their hospitality room in Montreal… a big congrats to them on their 4th place finish. At the end of the day, Area 2 is sending TEN choruses to International in Orlando. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire chorus contest!!!

Since we performed first in the quartet contest, we were able to watch many of the performers who came after us. So much talent crossed the stage that night. A huge shout-out to Moonstruck…. these ladies, who placed second, had us all sitting on the very edge of our chairs. Their package was stunning and we loved “Mean to Me”… a breathtaking performance. We are very excited to be heading to IC&C in Orlando with not only Moonstruck, but also Songburst, Stay Tuned, Kismet and In Cahoots!

The Saturday night luau-themed dinner was so fun… from judges doing a hula to Linda’s emcee performance to Lindsay C-H shouting out, “Ma!!! Your napkin is still in your pants!” when her mother walked up on stage to make a presentation. OMG, we laughed for a year… We also had a slight love affair with the food. BEST EVER. The staff at the Laval Sheraton was amazing…they put our food under the warmers so we could eat it after our performance. It really made our night.

Epic, Harmony Inc., barbershop quartet, Anne Albright, Christina Lewellen, fascinators

We love our "Andrews Sisters" fascinators! Thank you Debbie!

We were surrounded by loved ones… Dawn, Keith, Epic mom Debbie and Epic aunt Cindy. Thank you for sharing our amazing weekend with us. Thanks for the support and the gifts and the cheers and the hugs and the laughs. And thank you, Debbie, for the FASCINATORS. We love you all to pieces.

A few last-minute facts from Epic’s first contest:

  • Anne scared away a non-barbershopper hotel patron with her bodily functions.
  • Kris tripped on her heels, fell to the floor, and showed an entire chorus her undergarments.
  • Shana’s food-dar found us a restaurant that we visited pretty much every time we ate.
  • Thanks to Shana’s eloquent words, we invited God to be a part of our performance in our final moments in the warm-up room. It worked.
  • We are crazy enough to be developing a preference for certain brands of fake eyelashes.
  • We love Foreign Exchange. Classy chicks. Super talented.
  • We have developed as a quartet a few new harmless man crushes… they include John Burri, a rude-but-hot server at an Italian restaurant and Shana’s dad.
  • Chris introduced us to the “On a scale of 1 to 10″ game… a phrase that can be followed with anything. Ex: On a scale of one to ten, I’m blowing the wrong pitch. On a scale of one to ten, we don’t have enough towels.

Ok, ok… enough…. we know! We are just so full of love coming out of this past weekend. We had SO MANY Area 2 Harmony sisters thank us for being a part of the organization and for representing them at Orlando and as Area 2 champs. Please know that the pleasure is all ours. We are humbled and so incredibly grateful for the opportunity. We love you all to pieces…. Can’t wait to reunite once again for more contest craziness.
